Takoma is definitely hipper than Old Town Alexandria, which isn't really hip, but may well look that way compared to most of Fairfax, say. Takoma is not a dump, though its dumpier than Old Town Alexandria.

Bethesda, MD has plenty of gay parents. I'd look at BCC cluster in particular, but really all over WJ and Whitman too. I'd skip Potomac (Churchill) and upcounty schools.

Pretty much anywhere in the District. Also, Arlington.

OP, the overwhelming majority of DC neighborhoods (both in the city itself and the close-in areas) are going to be gay-friendly. Pick which neighborhood you want to live in and which has schools you like and go from there - for example, if you live in Dupont and send your child to Ross, the neighborhood is very different than if you live in upper NW and send your kid to Janney, even if both neighborhoods are very gay-friendly. One will be more 'cool' and urban and one will be somewhat more suburban in feel.

Okay let's look at this from a logistical standpoint...
Is there anyway to factually discern whether or not an area is especially hip? Is there anyway to factually discern whether or not an area is especially overrated? Is there anyway to factually discern whether or not an area is especially tolerant?
Answer to all three - NO - why, because all of those preferred traits are entirely perception-based. Person A thinks a neighborhood is shitty and uptight...Person B thinks that same neighborhood is swank and diverse. There's no way to accurately assess these aesthetic traits the OP is looking for because not everyone sees things the same way.
So...focus on the schools OP and drop the gay friendly crap.

Second Dupont Circle and Ross Elementary. Very inclusive school, of all kinds of families.

Glen Echo/Cabin John area.

I looked in Takoma Park when I was buying, and I found the houses to be tiny, the yards sloppily maintained, and the driveways tiny or non-existent.

thanks, Takoma park pretty much sucks ass for modern sophisticated and tidy gay couples. People talk about it like it's amazing but in reality it's a piece of crap.

OP here-10 years ago we looked at Takoma park-the homes were tiny (and overpriced), Piney Branch (near Flower Ave) looked like a crowded 3rd world country, and it bordered some questionable looking neighborhoods-I know the schools have decent reps-TPES, TPMS and Blair-but it still does not seem so great to me. The hippies can be just as annoying as the snobs of Bethesda so a decent mix would be ok-ya know cause "diversity".

TP has changed a lot in 10 yrs.

Old town is far from hip and Del Ray-like TKPK is another overpriced dump. Chevy Chase village is also overrated.

People try to talk up TP as if it's a hip area like Old Town Alexandria. In fact it's a dump.
