I've lived in Texas and I've lived in Mexico City. Very different tacos in each place.

Gringos and Mariachis were much closer to the Mexico City tacos than the Texas tacos, which is why a Texan wouldn't recognize them. And no grocery store powder mix was detected - unlike some of the Texas chains I've eaten in!

Mmm, Mia's. Haven't been there in a long time. Thanks for the reminder.

(Last time there it was Kidville--full up with families. So good for family night out, but maybe not so much for the romance-minded.)

Agree with the PP who suggested Faryab (Afghan). Yum! Olazzo is also good.

Guardados is one of our favorites for a cozy unpretentious date night. And I like that it's a family-run business and not yet another national or local chain.

Mia's Pizza is another good independent.

I really like Olazzo for italian... Prices are reasonable and they have great drinks. It can get a little loud in there and it isn't a huge place, but I always enjoy my food when I go there. They do not take reservations, though.

We love Guardados, and I agree it's the anti-Jaleo (I believe the chef or owner or something once worked at Jaleo). And they treat you like family.

Freddy's is a nice casual choice.

I've been to to Nest several times and always leave thinking I could have made the meal myself at home.

Tia Queta is gross and I can't understand why it hasn't been torn down.

Passage to India is really good - and we're Indian. Local owner-chef and some unique dishes.

We also really like Bacchus for Lebanese. Not quite the atmosphere of local chain, Lebanese Taverna. But much better food and their patio is nice when the weather is good.

Also like Gringos and Mariachis a lot - but as a PP said - it is REALLY loud.
