Nitpick much? There isn't AS MUCH of a difference as between an in state tuition and OOS tuition.

Look at publics in the state of Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York - not the flagships. If I mention specific schools this conversation will just veer to trashing those schools. Look at the Big Future search engine on The College Board website (just one example of site). It lists 356 public 4yr U's w/tuition <$20,000/yr.

Do tell. DC resident here, VA State is 17k just for tuition. I'd rather send my child to a CC.

Some of those costs include more than tuition/room and board. For example Wisconsin for OOS is $36,000 for tuition/room and board. The $41,000 listed on the website includes cost for estimated travel, books, supplies, misc. Some schools the cost is just tuition/room and board. That can make a big difference.

I'd pay $5K for fit, but that's me. I wouldn't pay more than that. Have you looked into scholarships (Fastweb, for example)? Also, my child is getting a small loan, no matter where she goes. I want her to take responsibility for her education and not feel it's a gift from us. I told DD not to apply to any school that doesn't feel right to her. She's crossed off one school that already offered her merit aid and acceptance (she's an athlete). Just not the right fit for her.

I don't want my child dropping out/transferring because the fit is not right, though. Don't send your kid to VATech if he really doesn't feel comfortable about it. There are other choices. A friend's DD got a free ride to the honors college at a well-regarded OOS school. Made it much cheaper than our in-state school.
