I've had multiple MCPS teachers tutor my children in math over the past few years and they generally charge $70-80 per hour. I'm willing to pay that because they are professionals and familiar with the curriculum being taught in my children's school. When are child is already frustrated with the material, it's a big mistake to try to mix parenting and tutoring. It's best to get an outside professional to help if you can. I also agree that the math curriculum in MCPS is a true disaster and it's no wonder that so many kids need tutoring.

Per the original query (instead of the 2.0 debate) we use an MCPS teacher for math tutoring for our fifth grader and she charges $50/hr.

As to why we don't teach him ourselves, we do. But he was struggling and every math assignment had become a power struggle and intensely frustrating. He would get upset that he didn't understand things, and break down in tears or stomp away from the table. Interjecting a third person who is not a parent helped immensely. The tutor is a lovely person and is very skilled at helping him get over confusion on basic issues in a way that neither parent (both PhDs) was able to do. She also has a repertoire of teaching techniques - games, exercises, etc - that we wouldn't know. She goes through his homework for the week with him and makes sure he's really understanding his work. It's turned him around completely, and well worth $50/wk (we're now at 1x per week, we used to do 2x/wk).
