Why do people not want the Safeway site redeveloped? It's so ugly.

I am 38 and I have never seen more entitled, selfish and horrible self involved people than in my cohort. The boomers look like empathetic do good ers compared to my work colleagues and neighbors in my age range. My DH and I steer clear of them

My DH went ther last month to pick up a couple of things. Apparently he got lost among the Pringles aisles and hasn't been seen since. He may still be wandering in the maze.

It's always the same bunch ranting + the bunch of imbecilic corpses on the ANC = no grocery store for the normal, busy families who have no time for this kind of stupidity.

I hope people remember this next time they want to interfere in the affairs of a private business.

+1 Some of the people on the Tenleytown listserve block almost all development and we are worse off for it.

Please. If you think a giant corporations turns on a Dime and runs away scared because of the concerns of some neighborhood moms, you don't understand the real business world. safeway was bought and its new ownership has different strategic priorities. Believe it, when the backers of a development truly want it, they go all out. Big contributions to mayoral and city council campaigns. The formation of"AstroTurf" groups that look like real local grass roots organizations. Lots of consultants and facilitators. There's even a local real estate lawyer for hire whose nickname is Payola.

Yes this type of development is everywhere now. Cheap construction, everything looks the same. Has been going on in Moco for years. Soon downtown Bethesda will be indistinguishable from Rockville town center, Gaithersburg Rio center and Germantown and Hyattsville "Arts" district (PG) - there will be a CVS, Five guys, Chipotle, Uncle julios, tara thai, ben & jerry's and buffalo wild wings on every corner. You "urban planners" out there are doing a terrible job IMO (not worth much), sorry! All these investment groups that own the properties only care about one thing $$$$$ and unfortunately only big chains have deep enough pockets to cover a lease.

Some designs are cheaper than others. The new Giant development on Wisconsin Ave looks like they just used the plans for a generic airport hotel.

I'm sorry you are a relatively lower income renter. We old people kinda hold the cards for the moment, and the property. Not to worry, some day you too will get older and you might at that point own an expensive house that you don't want to see diminished in value.

You are an idiot. A modern grocery store in your neighborhood actually improves your property value.
Signed, an actual urban planner

Unless you happen to live right next to one.

Ward 2 and Ward 3 aren't exactly food deserts.

You should see the Palisades listserv. A bunch of half-dead weirdos launching conspiracy theories about Safeway and condos - as though some nice new condos along that ratty old strip would be the end of the world.

Um, hardly. I recently purchased one of the nicer houses in the neighborhood. None of the affluent families care about condos over a new and improved Safeway. It is hippy-ish weirdos still living in 1960's leading the charge.

Gee, no wonder boomers are hated. Fortunately you will die first.

I cannot tell if the "old" person is joking but if not, the old person is a fool.

Granted both Safeway's in the Palisades and behind the Volvo dealership will be no sad loss as both are an atrocity (rude, rude, rude staff, terrible produce, etc.), they still served as a quick stop if something was needed in a jiffy.

The Georgetown Safeway is terrible, I don't want to go to Whole Foods for EVERYTHING but I guess that it what it has come to.

Hopefully a Trader Joe's or something along those lines will go into the old Fresh & Green's spot. That would be the best for the surrounding neighborhood.

Lord knows what is going to happen now that all of the buildings where Crate & Barrel, etc. have been sold.

Maybe the new Giant will be a good alternative? One can hope.
