It could be just a reaction to eating lots of sugary food as opposed to dyes. It's possible to have an allergy to a dye or additive, but I would have your child evaluated by an allergy/immunology physician for guidance and diagnosis instead of assuming it's the dye.

My daughter throws up all throughout the night (or when she lies down), after any consumption of anything with the ingredient red #40 in it. It seems she is highly allergic to it, but when I look it up, throwing up is not a symptom. I am so happy I came across this post. Even if it is from 2014. Continuing, she can have red things (strawberry, watermelon, peach, etc.), ONLY if it is made with real flavors, and not with dye.

My sister was/is allergic to certain red dyes - vividly remember her getting like a red slushy at a carnival when we were kids and staining the carpet with vomit. Not all red dyes - the ones that are in Hawaiian Punch used to make her sick, but she can usually eat red velvet cake - so possible your kiddo is just allergic to a specific type of red dye. You could contact the bakery and ask exactly what they use to get the red color and just watch out for that kind?

I my brother and my dad all can't drink red drinks like Koolaid or red pop. We will vomit shortly after drinking it. I remember going to so many birthday parties where that was the only beverage and we would ask for water. The parents alwsys acted funny and we had to explain my allergy to it. Growing up todsy no one would think an allergy would be unusual like it was in the 80's and 90's.

Why did you feel the need to post a reply? Don’t worry about what someone else feeds their child. This was meant for help and suggestions. You do what you want with your own child but don’t come on here acting a fool. You have a disgusting attitude.

That’s me! As a kid I would vomit from red dye but now I just get the kind of migraines that make you wish you could vomit for some relief. My biggest triggers are store-bought baked goods when I forget they include dye, like cheap Red Velvet, or the occasional hopeful mistake, like an Icee on a hot day.

Poor kids. I’m sorry to hear that I have so many fellow sufferers. Red treats are the best but the aftermath is cruel.

Typical. It isn’t digestible, so it always goes straight through. It can easily cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

As a child I was allergic to red dye in the liquid amoxicillin. It went away as I got older, but now I'm almost 40 and have recently discovered that the allergy has come back. I love cranberry juice and now it makes me vomit. I thought it was indigestion. I had some cranberry ginger ale and a few minutes later I was in the bathroom. I looked at the ingredients and saw red dye #40... no more red dye for me.

It takes a LOT of red food coloring to make red frosting. I once ordered Elmo cupcakes and the frosting was bitter because there was so much food dye in it. Tossed them and went back and got some plain cupcakes. I used to do a lot of cake decorating so I should have know better.

NP here - I'm going to Google this now. Saturday I let my toddler (who almost never eats sugar) have a bit of Twizzler and some red Swedish Fish, and he was a monster the rest of the day. Of course, he's two... But I wonder if the candy (and not just the sugar) had something to do with it.

Lol at OP pointing out that it was “from a bakery” and “not a grocery store”

I would blame the excessive icing!
