Somewhat off-topic: where is your DD attending K that she doesn't start until next week? I thought this past week was the latest any local schools --other than some preschools--started?
In no way am I trying to be snarky or judging you, your DD &/or her school, BTW! I'd generally think this would be self-evident; after all,why on Earth would anyone be snarky or judgemental about something like this? On DCUM, however, it seems you can never truly be sure!
I'm just a bit curious,perhaps because, having grown up in the northeast where pretty much all K-12 students went back a day or two after Labor Day every year, it still seems odd to me when school starts anytime else. School in August??? Blasphemy! Meanwhile,my college roommate from NC was absolutely shocked when I mentioned that I was used to being in school until at least mid-June. I guess "normal" is relative to what one's used to!
We're overseas at a private. Even here, however, DD's school starts late in comparison to everyone else we know. The American schools have been in session for 2 weeks and most local privates started on Labor Day.
FYI, I was shocked when I discovered that kids in GA were finishing the school year in May. What in the world??

There is nothing wrong with celebrating the small things. My son started K this week and it made me think that this is just day one of many. 13 years of school mornings ahead but this was the first (I don't count pre-k).
I think that is something to celebrate. And next year the first day of 1st grade will be celebrated as well.

The first day is ok, but we love to celebrate the last day! I have an only child and we look forward to summers when we can relax and do the things we are too busy to enjoy during the school year. We love spending the day at the pool, sitting outside after dinner while ds plays with his friends in the yard, going camping, and we go out for ice cream as soon as school is dismissed on the last day! It's a fun tradition that we started in kindergarten.
