Don't over think this.

Who makes your favorite fried chicken?
Hitching Post. Highly recommended.
Of course. But the original question was where to get take-out fried chicken for a picnic. Sorry if that's not high-end enough for you!
Hitching Post is super cheap. I'm not surprised you've never been there, but I'm surprised you'd assume it's expensive just because it's exceptionally good.
I guess I shouldn't be, though. People in MoCo often conflate $$$ for quality. Enjoy the Giant chicken, though. I'm sure it's the best MoCo has to offer.
Time for your meds.
Ah, touched a nerve, huh? And leave it to a bored MoCo housewife to immediately jump to the idea of needing to medicate herself out of existence. You guys are so predictable!
What a bore, or should I say what a boar you are. I live it Manhattan bitch.
Here's the chicken I ate this weekend.

Keep your D.C. attitude. It is a culinary backwater and flyover country.

I've never actually had Popeye's but have enjoyed KFC in the past. How do the two brands compare?

I don't necessarily equate $$$ and quality, which is exactly why I am not opposed to Popeyes and the like for some basic, good, southern fried chicken. Despite living in MoCo, I am able to use the google and read an online menu. $15 per plate fried chicken isn't my idea of picnic blanket potluck fare. Thanks for playing!
Whoa. Hold up. Perhaps a few of you wandered in here from the nanny forum, so maybe you need to be schooled in forum politeness. We here in the food forum are mellow peeps. We share tips and cheerfully respond to the same questions posted by newbies on a daily basis (what should I send for lunch for my preschooler? What are your easy weeknight meals? How do I know if my eggs are bad? Can I sample the grapes at the WF?). We don't smack down, especially over fried chicken. Fried chicken brings people together (well, not as well as mac and cheese and mashed potatoes bring people together, but, you get my point.)
To be fair, OP, you asked for a recommendation for the "best" fried chicken for your potluck. You didn't ask for "good, basic, southern fried chicken". You were a little unclear. Of course, Ms. Manhattan, you were pretty unkind with the whole Bitch comment. We're talking about fried chicken, here, not...uh..ebola.
So, let's remember our manners and the watchwords of the day. Fried chicken brings people TOGETHER.
Peace out.
My Ms. Manhattan comments were only for the benefit of the snarky D.C. poster who mocked Montgomery County. I can play her game. Maybe the Montgomery County food scene isn't as good as D.C., just as the D.C. food scene doesn't compare to the food scene in New York, Chicago or L.A. My message was don't be so high and mighty, someone can always one up you. Sorry that you didn't like me calling him/her a bitch, but he/she certainly deserved it. I calls it as I sees it.
I've got no quibble with you, so peace out to you too.
