That's sad.

Anonymous wrote:Probably about 20k? I feel like, if I'm going on vacation, I want to FEEL like I'm on vacation FULLY. So we fly first class after taking a car to the airport, we go to amazing restaurants and spas, ride horses on the beach, etc.
I'm not about to drive 12 hours to sleep on the bedroom floor of a friend's kid's room for a night before going camping in a tent and then staying in a motel on the way back, eating fast food and food from packages and cans.

We spend about $2k at Spring break, another $4k or so in the summer.
How does anyone take a family of four to Europe for <$10k?
You have friends and friends of friends that you stay with. Of course, you need to make sure that you also offer your place in return.
I do this. There are just two of us traveling (me and 9yo DD) so I like to stay with friends whenever possible. We're lucky to have friends in great places so have gone to Switzerland, Brazil and South Africa the past few years. Airfare is the biggest expense but I can usually keep the total cost under $5K. We have an extra bedroom in our DC condo so return the favor often.
