I also think the woman who was crying may have had other reasons...who knows its likely if she is Israeli she has family there and is scared for their life, maybe is horrified by what they are doing over there, tired of hearing Israel bashed for their behavior (rightfully so), we can only speculate, as no one was there..we can only guess.


Bottom line this tense situation has all kinds of ripple effects which I think we are just now beginning to see.

To the pp what is wrong with The Jews or The Arabs, is that not what they are? You lost me on that one bud.

I think Israeli policy is wrong-headed and cruel. But I also think they feel it is necessary to protect themselves.

I think Hamas's rockets are terrible. But I also understand the anger behind them.

It's a terrible situation and I don't mean to excuse anyone for their part of the violence. But I think they are driven by an awful situation rather than by evil intent.

Most of all, I think we on DCUM should be agreeing that the killing is awful and perhaps discussing whether there is a plausible way out, rather than bringing the war over here by attacking each other.

One more thing: I wish I might never again see phrases like "the Jews", "the Arabs", or "the Muslims".

Well if adults at the camp were being critical maybe it is because they are being affected by the bombing. Maybe they have family who were bombed in Lebanon in the 80's , 90's or 2000's ( pick a decade) or in Palestine. Maybe they were born in Palestine and came here as a refugee decades ago. Americans have a hard time seeing Arabs as just like them and when they meet one at a social event or OMG, at a private school in NW DC its like its so obvious they have never really faced the complex issues with an open mind or seen Arabs as people.

I'm sorry , thousands are being killed, the least a safe person this side of the Atlantic could do is stand there and open their mind.

Agreed Jeff, but the PP said it was the mother who left in tears, right, not the kid ? The kid may have not been in ear shot.

I'm not sure I identify with an American crying because someone is being critical of Israel and I know lots of Israeli's and can pretty much guarantee they would not cry. Make a wise crack, maybe. Ball everyone out maybe. Cry, no.

As an American who has lived in the Middle East, I'm used to having my country severely condemned . I've had amputated limbs extended for me to " face up to". Grown men have told their stories to me through an anger that almost had them in tears. All the while they were poring me more tea, of course and being very respectful as is their tradition but I don't think I ever wanted to cry. I was embarrassed. I was indignat for them . I apologized, but I didn't cry.

Sorry, I dont buy it.

It is a terrible, terrible, thing, but it is not the Holocaust. It is lazy and wrong to describe it as such.

Regarding protests in Israel against the war, there have been several. It takes a lot of bravery to protest against the war in Israel's current environment and the courage of the protesters should not go unappreciated.

I don't feel that way. I never really paid too much attention other than the regular "trendy" response to support the Palestinians but secretly thinking "WTF?" about their behavior and statements. Now that I am paying more attention -- and reading the Political forum on DCUM -- I think they are in the wrong and I'm not afraid to articulate that. I totally support Israel. I even enjoy the passing daydream of moving there and living as a non-Jew (I'm Christian).

I am very PRO peace but that woman was hurting. She would've gotten a hug from me, and I dare anybody try and screw with me. Anybody. And if she had been Palestinean and was feeling the same, she would have gotten a hug also.

I think PP was talking about the adults, not the children who were talking. Did I misunderstand your comment?


Maybe I misunderstood. I thought the children were somehow involved. I'm not used to being at a children's camp long enough to have a substantive conversation.

Three successive surveys carried out on July 14, July 16-17, and July 23 among Jewish Israelis revealed near-unanimity in that sector of Israeli society on Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, with an overwhelming majority of participants indicating they believed the offensive was justified. Over the course of three surveys, an average of 95 percent of respondents — 96% in the first poll, 92% in the second and 97% in the third — said they thought the operation was warranted.

Meanwhile, only 3 to 4% of participants said they thought the Israeli military has used excessive firepower throughout the operation in Gaza — 3.1% in the first poll, 3.8% in the second and 3.7% in the third.

The post or times reported a protest in tel aviv that had 3000 attendees.

Granted that was in the context of an article about broad support in Israel for the war.
