Among all the pictures taken, yes, perfectly fine to take pictures of the original nuclear family - very natural to do this. This was Mom & Dad's family.

And (not that people are thinking this way at the time) some relations/marriages may break up. It's nice to have the original family pictures too.

Why is this such a big deal? You do a bunch of combinations and people can display whichever ones they like best. The picture with everyone in it is nice, too, but the faces are just tiny dots. The trick is to get all the groups represented and that can take ages.

We always do just "inlaw" aka bride/groom and siblings and cousins. Then we do just "outlaws!" Aka sils, BILs, cousins in law. "Outlaws Assemble!" Is their battle cry.

We had family photos taken before our wedding ceremony-- one with me and my siblings/parents, and one with DH and his siblings/parents. This also included spouses and children. It didn't seem strange. If we had excluded the spouses of siblings that would have seemed strange.

Combination of things. Many are in a photo album. Some may go to relatives. A few are displayed. We (bride and groom) have a picture of just our grandmothers (both sides together) , our wedding party, and a black and white wedding photo of us and color photo of us displayed among the various rooms in the house.
