It depends on child, too. My oldest is 10.5 and I can leave him for a little bit of time, but I can't leave him alone with his younger siblings and I doubt I will ever be able to do that as they fight!
My friend with kids also follows these rules...
10 is too young for more than an hour or so during the day - that's the time to start, but by 12 two hours is insufficient.
Of course, it depends on the kid, and of course, a kid alone is ok at a younger age than a kid taking care of a sibling.
