No need to say anything! I would just pretend that I did not notice her reaction. And then casually slip in in a subsequent conversation (and at an appropriate time) what the PP suggested - "You two make a very good-looking couple".

Someone said this to me once and I thought it was a nice compliment. Who knows why it hit a nerve with her - PPs above have given all the suggestions I could think of. Next lesson just say, "hey, hope I didn't offend!" Then move on and assume she has issues. Lesson learned!

If a man saw another man's wife walking towards them and made a comment - damn that is a smoking hot woman. Many women would object to that. The difference would be that the guy's friend would be proud he had the smoking hot wife.

I am also married to the 'eye candy' of or es like a pp. Women tell me pretty regularly that my husband is handsome. Sometimes I roll my eyes at them, sometimes I say thank you. It really depends on my mood. I never take offense to it. I don't think you have said anything wrong. That said, it becomes inappropriate if you say it again.

Obnoxious yes, but only as the surprised sound when you hear someone talking about your husband. And if she's going to laugh it off as a joke, my response is the same.
