I am pretty to with the flow about things. I will happily sleep on an air mattress or on the floor. And I would say hell no to this trip. Not happening. That sounds absolutely awful with small kids and 2 bathrooms.

You could also say that if a marriage can't survive a crowded condo for a couple nights, then you have bigger problems than the condo.

Not really the same. If I didn't have kids, I could deal with this situation. But am I going to force my kid to nap in the car or stroller because of this situation? Absolutely not. Not to mention what could happen if there was a fire. It has nothing to do with the state of marriage. Granted, DH isn't an asshole and would never force us to stay in this situation.

I think it all depends on the life you live. Most of the posters here who are absolutely shocked and horrified at sharing bathrooms or sleeping in a living room probably live in massive homes with multiple bathrooms. In the majority of the world, sharing bathrooms and being a little crowded is just par for the course. Only in rich people world would it be grounds for divorce or set off such an outrage.

But, here's the thing. We don't live in a 3rd world country. We do have fabulous amenities as an American citizen. You are welcome to climb on your soapbox and preach about how spoiled we all are, but here's the thing, we are Americans. We do have the option to vacation with our own bedroom and bath. Some of us choose to exercise this right. I'm pretty sure Thomas Jefferson would want his own bedroom and bath too.

Your view of "American" is very self-centric. There are many, many Americans who do not have fabulous amenities and who don't have the option to vacation in places where they don't need to share bedrooms or bathrooms. Many can't afford to vacation at all.

You are more than welcome to exercise that right. But people are basically saying that haivng to share a bathroom or not have multiple bedrooms is grounds for divorce. That is an American ideal that is pathetic. That marriages and relationships are so disposable and superficial that having to 'rough' it for a weekend is something to get divorced over - because damn it I'm an American and I only do luxury.

No. Just no.

What you describe is not a vacation. Send DH with the kids and stay at home with Netflix and some good wine.

No way. I would tell my husband no f***ing way. I'd point out there will be no sex for the next 6 months as you will be in intense therapy recovering from the PTSD of this vacation.

That's not a vacation that's a trip to hell.

All of you are too old to vacation like that. I'm assuming this is not being done due to finances.

We went on vacation and all stayed together but it was a little better - 3br, 2ba with 7 adults and 5 kids and it was very crowded, but we all survived. Lots of air mattresses on the floor and trying not to step on one another.

DH's brother owns a condo at the beach - it is a 2 bedroom/ 2 bath. His entire family is going on a beach trip for 3 days/2 nights and we are all cramming into this place. That's his parents, his 2 brothers, their wives and 2 kids each and us and our kid. Our kid still naps so I have no idea how this is going to work. Though the condo is in a hotel building, the brothers refuse to get a hotel room because "it takes away from the family trip". I'm pretty sure having 3 unhappy wives will do that too.

Any tips on how to handle this? I can't refuse to go. I can't book a room for myself. These are just not options if I want to remain married. I'm really most concerned about the fact that the bedrooms are directly adjacent to the living area and our kid is a light sleeper. So while I don't mind to push her bedtime on vacation, she will be unable to sleep with his loud family up until all hours. And same goes for naps.

Help!

bed 1=1 king bed=1 couple MIL/FIL with overflow kids from bed 2
bed 2=2 fulls=1 couple and OP/DH/child
LR=1 pull-out=1 couple and all the bigger kids on the floor-couple with the most kids

Arrive late and leave early. By night 2 one of the couples will likely vacate.

This is a good sleeping arrangement but it still doesn't change the fact that 13 people will be sharing two bathrooms.

A three year old can skip a few naps. I thought you had a one year old. But the whole thing is seriously fucked up.

Your post brought back so many memories for me. I just looked back at photos of a trip where we had two bedrooms and one bath for 8 adults and 4 kids. Mine was 2 at the time. We just happen to all be cheap so that's why we do things like this. And we all make it work without complaining and have fun doing it. I have no advice for you except to try to keep your spirits up and find ways to make it work and have fun.

If your husband would divorce you because you rented a hotel room rather than cram 13 people into a two-bedroom condo, that's really his issue. That sounds completely insane. Where do they expect everyone to sleep? Call the hotel and see if they can't give you a room next to or close to the condo. Or see if any of your sisters-in-law have more backbone than you do and will rent a room, with you agreeing to split the cost.
