Thumbs down on the first three. They look very "mother-of-the-bride" to me.

I'm on the fence. Not a fan of the high-low trend, but if you're 5'9" or taller, maybe you could carry it off.

Try something like this.
Not this. Reminds me of a dress I wore to a College Winter Formal in 1988.
Anonymous wrote:I've been to absolutely lovely farm weddings -- sort of Martha Stewart meets Pottery Barn (uh, in a good way). Having said that, requiring black tie is ridiculous. IMO.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:"What's the venue? I'm from southern Virginia and don't know ANYONE who owns black tie. Having a hard time even imagining specifying an attire for a southern Virginia wedding. Maybe I'm just a hillbilly, though."
Obviously you are a hillbilly. I am also from southern Virginia and most of the weddings have attended at home have been black tie or cocktail. Let's please not sully the reputation of southern Virginia simply because your friends and family only have Carhart attire and no black tie.
If you're going to attempt to be witty by making fun of hillbilly attire, at least spell the shop correctly. It's CarharTT - two Ts.
But Southern VA is a big area, and if it's Charlottesville vs., say, Pittsylvania County....
Black tie means very dressy. So a very fancy cocktail dress with fabulous shoes and done hair is ok. Plain cocktail dress that could double as part of a suit with plain jane hair and flats is not ok. Your man should be in a tux.
