DD is friends with a very sweet girl who has gotten massive amounts of tutoring each year. Last night I saw the texts she's sent DD and I cringed at all the spelling mistakes. Kind girl though, so I let DD continue being friends with her.

Can you just say hi to the kid, and then turn to the other adults? Let the parents entertain their own kid.

Holy crap. You LET your kid be friends with someone else even though she doesn't meet your intellectual standards?

I mean, I consider myself rather an academic snob but... whoah.

Also, FWIW, my husband is dyslexic and can't spell for crap. Makes embarrassing spelling mistakes all the time. Has a Ph.D. in physics and is way smarter than I am. Just sayin'.

Calling a child a dumbo...I've heard it all now. You should be ashamed of thinking and feeling this way about a child...there's something wrong with YOU, not him.

Talk slower and louder.

That always works. At least it does with foreigners.

Children are people. Connect with your humanity and stop judging people's value (in general, or to you, specifically) by their wit and intelligence.

Being an intellectual snob does not make you a better person. It makes you a worse person. Strive for better--you'll lead a happier life, and so with the folks around you.

Sounds like my almost-5 year old nephew. Super social, very sporty, well-liked except by the serious, "bummer" kind of children. He's probably going to be a dumb jock, but he has heart and is a favorite in our family.

Shame on OP, judging and selectively ignoring children in this way.
