IMO, kids do not "graduate" from elementary school or middle school, no matter what kind of ridiculous hoopla ensues. They are promoted. No flowers or gifts necessary.
I, too, think the K, 5th grade, and 8th grade graduations are BS. However, they are taken SO seriously in this area that if you don’t at least participate with a bit of effort, your kid will stand out and be disappointed.
Learned this the hard way after 5th grade when I scoffed at their “all girls must wear a white dress” rule and sent her in a mostly white dress with a floral pattern. And I had no flowers for her afterwards. She was upset because you could see her flower pattern through the cheapo gown. Then she was upset because she was the only one in all the photos with her friends who didn’t have a little bouquet from the grocery store. Lesson learned. I did better for the 8th grade nonsense.
