Google Maps is your friend. Without knowing the exact addresses it's hard to say, but having lived EOTP I can tell you that the traffic on the majority arteries you could use to make this trip - Military, Rhode Island Ave, Georgia, South Dakota Ave, North Cap - are busy as hell at rush hour. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

That sounds like a nightmare commute. I would not do it, unless I knew I was planning on moving relatively early in the school year.

I think the unrealistic expectations about commute time comes from focusing only on the drive time. If google maps says it will take 30 minutes, you better build in another 30 minutes on top of that (depending on the age of your child). Think about finding parking, walking your child to class, etc. etc. My DS, who is 3, has unexpected meltdowns because he forgot to bring his favorite toy to the car. Often people don't consider this as part of the time it takes to drop your child off.

Oooh, that's a brutal drive. This city was just not built for east-west commuting.

Either carpool or don't do it.

We drive our children from EotP to a school in NW, and then go downtown for work. We usually park the car in NW after dropping off at school, and then Metro downtown. That way, we get cheaper parking and avoid the traffic. Afternoon is just the reverse.

I live near Brookland, my kids go to school a mile from our house, and I metro to Dupont most days. Still takes me a minimum of 45m from leaving the house to getting to work.

I drive from downtown to Columbia Heights back to downtown for my charter school, but I have to agree. No freaking way would I make this drive.

If you DO decide to take this on, I hope you are in K, so when you drop out you have a backup plan of your IB school.

Also, do NOT take Rhode Island ave.....horrible.


We live in Brookland and gave up Stoddert soccer b/c of the drive and that's just Saturday mornings. I cannot imagine driving this every morning...

I also know somebody who did the opposite commute. Live EOTP and her DD goes to a private school in Upper NW. After doing it for a year, she gave up the school. Long story short, she didn't have a life and it drained her physically & mentally. OP mentioned they plan to move closer to the school so hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.
