I personally am really tired of hearing people talking about their vacation homes on the Cape.

You know you wish you could join us regular folks at Great Wolf Lodge.

Arlington SAHM here. What's your wife like? Because I feel like it's me noticing it rather than them flaunting it.

She is an Arlington SAHM too. She's a Type A, somewhat mellowed by kids, who are now in late ES. I don't think she would ever belong to a country club (not our speed), but I also think she lets the tennis skirt-wearing set bug her for whatever reason. I'll see those flashes of insecurity that we're not "keeping up." But then I just laugh it off, tell her that's not our scene, and she snaps back to reality.

As for what causes tensions between men? In North Arlington, maybe a $150,000 car. Or frequent exotic travel. There are a few of those. But even then, not really. It could just be me, but I'm very much "take me as I am" and I'll do you the same courtesy. I'm secure enough with who I am and what I have accomplished that I never feel small, even when a neighbor comes home and parks his Lambourghini next to my 6-year-old Odyssey. Because I know I could replace the Odyssey anytime I wanted to -- I just don't want to.

PP here. I totally get it. You sound like our people. I get the flashes of insecurity, too, even though a lot of that "stuff" is just not us. I think it's the visible reminder of cliquey-ness. If she can tolerate a preschooler, send her my way. I'm the one not wearing workout clothes of any kind.

I am wondering about the insecurities of people who comment on the insecurities of the "nouveau riche".

Not in my MD suburb.

There are groups of women like this all over. In the NE there are groups that go to their ski houses every weekend and talk about it all week. In the west and Midwest there are lots of tennis and running groups. Some groups act like high school, some are nice. I tend to spend most of my time with my family, my neighbors, or individual women friends. I dropped out of a book club because a few of the women were very gossipy.

What do men notice? What causes tension between men?

A good golf swing (in this context).

So they don't drop the "club" much, but they do drop the comments about running...and there kids are perfect....On the weekends, they go to Soccer games/LL, then go to the early morning runs on Sunday.

They belong to the club also. They are just not telling you.

I've never noticed this but I don't drink coffee, so there's that.

Honestly, I have learned not to pay attention to this kind of stuff. Middle school and high school were hard for me, I choose not to revisit those years.

Club, tennis clothes, running schedules, whatever....when I see grown women acting as if they are teenagers, it makes me laugh.
