I have been jonesing for some lox.

My husband and I had a huge fight about bacon the other day: I ate a cobb salad with maybe one slice crumbled over the top; he went apeshit saying that I was poisoning our child with nitrates. I knew it wasn't a big deal. I rarely eat it anyway. I am planning a trip to the Silver Diner, where they serve gluten-free French toast with marriage-safe, nitrate-free bacon.

Your husband is an ass.

Agreed. Is he generally this controlling or just extremely anxious about bacon.

Why avoid salad bars? I get salads at really good places like Chopt which uses a lot of all natural ingredients (hormone free chicken and nitrate free bacon and a lot of healthy ingredients like kale etc)

The choline in it is actually good for brain development. I ate it daily when I was pregnant, and both of my kids are crazy smart.

I pay attention to the quality and sourcing of where I eat my food, which is the greater variable to control. No way in hell would I eat a cold cut sandwich from Subway or a similar place, for a multitude of reasons, including the listeria risk and general "ick" factor of the "food" they serve.

I have to agree, I've seen too many subways closed by the health department not to mention got BAD food poisoning at a subway where it was coming out of both ends, lol. I know they aren't all the same, but it's turned me off to this chain.

Subway or any other lower-cost sandwich shop. Standard fast food places where everything is nuked or fried takes care of a lot of nasty bugs, but the "fresh" part of subway seems to be asking for trouble, storing/prepping food how they do.

I ate bacon bits on my salad almost daily while pregnant w/ DD. She is almost 3 and is advanced. Seriously people need to relax. A lot of these "is it safe" posts are almost comical. Many of our mothers ate bacon, smoked fish and even drank wine while pregnant. We turned out fine. I think the angst people cause themselves worrying about stuff like this is worse than anything else.
