I actually strive to wear my (just past shoulder-length) hair DOWN because it seems unprofessional to have a pony tail everyday (which is what I would otherwise do). Am I missing something? Can I really get away with a pony tail all the time!?

I cut my hair twice a year, so that it starts out shoulder length and gets pretty long over the next six months. Near the end, I usually put it in a low bun every day.
I think a lot can depend on how healthy and thick your hair is. If you have long, thick, healthy supermodel hair you can get away with it more easily than if it gets sort of thin and scraggly at the ends. if that's the case, you're better off cutting it shorter.
