this is making me remember what i liked about law school!

but i don't practice anymore and can't for the life of me remember what could happen if the friend burned the letter.

I'm not an attorney. If a friend asked me to burn a letter in a fireplace because she's going to file a lawsuit, why would I be faced with punishment for doing it? It's not like I have knowledge of a crime and am trying to protect my friend.

In what social circles do you operate in which friends ask other friends to burn letters for them and no one thinks that's a red flag?

This poster isn't responding to a question of social mores; s/he's asking about the implications of a legal opinion re Jeff's liability. (For ridiculous-sounding extensions of arguments, try listening to the Supreme Court Justices' questions during oral arguments.)
