I can't believe this attitude. Nothing will be done if resignation and complacency -- "we live in a city, there's crime in the city" -- is allowed to take hold. The recent mayors in New York didn't tolerate this sort of attitude. And we shouldn't tolerate it in Washington. Plus, the recent number of violent incidents in the usually safe Woodley Park area should give residents pause.
Bigotry of low expectations. In these peoples minds black people will always be criminals so they pretend to be "tolerant" by telling us to accept this behavior. The most racist liberal.

Why is this an AA problem??? This is a DC problem genius. When a white person commits a crime, where are the calls for "leaders of the white community to clean up the mess?" There aren't, because no one believes one white man to represent the entire community, criminal or leader.

This is exactly right. However, the event is styled as African-American Family Day, so you can't ignore that aspect and have to consider the politics and sensibilities if they decide to cancel it going forward -- and cancel it they should, at least for a while.
Exactly. If this is a pattern on AA day, then it is the height of stupidity and naïveté to pretend this is just a random crime. Why do you think there was a heavy police presence today? Because this has happened before. The shootings and the near-riots happened before, including last week.

I should add I was right outside the Zoo, stuck in the wide crosswalk across from the entrance and 7 eleven. It looked like 7 eleven was getting robbed/looted too, but that wasn't reported on either.

I was in my car on Connecticut right after the shooting. It's odd how none of the new sources report on the almost riot atmosphere that occurred afterwards. People flooded the streets stopping all traffic, banging on car windows, climbing on car hoods. They were not scared either but in party mode. It was terrifying.

I was at a stroller fit class at the zoo this afternoon and I find it odd where the shooting happened as there were SO many police out front of the zoo on Connecticut. Who fires a gun when there are 20 police on the same block?

I went by at 4:45 (before the shooting) and there were a ton of cops milling about. I am not sure what else can be done but to cancel the event.

It really takes all the fun out of it. And then violence turns it tragic.
