I think I may have included hearst as well - I mixed them up for both kids. Lafayette was #1 for both, but then included the others, including Hearst in different orders for each.

Shoot, where's Barnard? That drop in test scores is killing us!

Barnard is a great school. I think the lottery results from last year are what kill it...for being a Title 1 school that is only at Rising status, it was remarkable how little the waitlist moved. The test scores dropped last year, but that matched up with the increase in ELL students, which understandably, have a harder time with standardized tests administered in English. I just hope more IB families give Barnard a try...I think it could really be a great choice for local families.

This example seems to support an argument that families who eschew their local DCPS in the lottery, should not have the continued right to show up and enroll whenever they want. This sort of lottery playing, where your local school remains your back-up plan, but the school isn't aware, will only cause havoc on the school's budget and enrollment projections. I imagine this poster's child is already at Powell. They know they can stay, but will jump if they get a spot at any school above IT. OK, that's cool. But if you get a spot, accept it but then decide after a month or two that the commute is terrible and the school isn't all that you had hoped and you want to go back to Powell, I don't think you should be able to. That's completely unfair to school, the budget, the families who already committed, etc. These are the sort of things the boundary, feeder pattern committee is looking at.

They'll go to Powell, because as an in-bounds Kindergarten student, their child is guaranteed a space regardless of the lottery.

I can't enter the lottery for K -- my DC is IB already. It doesn't even appear as an option since my DC has a right to attend Powell.

Agreed. A commute to SWW in Foggy Bottom is so different than to Mundo Verde or to Cap City. I'd love for OP to report back when she does get her match.
