legumes, leafy green, iron-fortified cereals, dried fruit, eggs, red meat, and whole grains. Iron from animal products is easier to absorb than iron from plant sources.

That, and too much milk (which contains no iron) reduces your kid's appetite for other foods.

It is probably helpful that your child does not drink too much milk. I recall hearing that excessive drinking of milk is a main cause of iron deficiency. Must interfere with absorption somehow.
