No, it's old English. My grandmother (not from South) used it: Pocketbook was originally just that: a small book that could be carried in the pocket. The OED shows that by 1685 it was understood also to be a "book for notes, memoranda, etc., intended to be carried in the pocket; a notebook; also, a book-like case of leather or the like, having compartments for papers, bank-notes, bills, etc." In the last meaning the DAE attests its use in the United States since 1816.

You realize this is completely irrelevant, right? We're not talking about a book for note, memorande etc or a book-like case. That is a completely different use of the word. Clearly we're talking about purses.

4 bags/purses. 3 were about $300 each (Cole Haan, J Crew, and Joy Gryson?). 1 is from the Gap.

I have 3 purses (what my mom called them, from PA).

1 "work bag" large rectangle-ish black one with flowers on it, bought at DSW, no idea what brand
1 "mom bag" brownish fabric purse, might be Fossil brand, bought at Macy's
1 small black clutch for fancy occasions (ie when I don't have kids with me and can get away with just a lipstick, credit card and phone, not a first aid kit, wipes, gum, and extra socks!)

Anonymous wrote:I love bags. I have about 20. 6 or 7 of them are mid-level "designer" bags from Coach, Kate Spade, Prada, Lilly Pulitzer. Most of the rest are nice bags from a department store, like Nine West.

I didn't pay more than $30 for any of them, except for one Prada bag that I bought for $80 on Ebay. It's the bag that I take clubbing. I buy all of my bags on Ebay or at the Goodwill.

PP, I think Prada is not mid-level, it's as 'designer' as you can get.

On a side note, my MIL calls handbags 'pocketbooks'. I always thought it's very funny.

Ugh ' pocketbook' is one of those words that just grates in my ear. The first time i ever heard it, a woman said she lost it and i was looking all over for her for a small book or journal. Imagine my confusion when she found her large purse.

I have at least 25-30 ranging from discount non- designer to Gucci. About 8-10 are black. MIL have me about half of them as gifts (and she purchased all the nice ones - I would never spend more than $40 of my own money on a bag). I haven't bought a new one in at least 10 years but when I was single and living in NY I would buy a couple of new ones each season.

I own 1 small inexpensive brown leather purse just big enough for a cheap cell phone. After my purse was snatched 10 years ago, I quit carrying one.

I have 6, I think:

1 tan colored large leather satchel from J Crew
1 taupe cheap but very lightweight bag from H&M
1 small black bag with rhinestones I use for evening wear
1 little black beaded clutch from Target
1 brown suede handbag from Target
1 small tan Le Sac woven bag I like for summer

The only handbag that cost me more than $50 was the J Crew bag, which I think was around $250.
