I love the name Margaret....but I hate the nickname Maggie.

I would use Meg as a nickname.

Yes but I think the so called classic-old person names go in cycles. Rose sounds like an old lady name. But it has made a comeback.

I'm a Margaret and I've gone by Maggie since birth... it's a wonderful name! I don't really like Margaret and do think it sounds old lady, but I like having the option to use it on my resume or professionally (even though I don't). I wouldn't have wanted Maggie to be my given name. Margaret is definitely in the same category as Katherine and Elizabeth - old English/royalty - but to me it's a little clunkier to say for an everyday name than the other two. You could use Maggie as a nickname for a different name like Marguerite or Magnolia if you decide you don't like Margaret.

I am Margaret, I have always gone by Margaret.

I did not like it as a child ... not because Margaret is an old lady name but because the Dennis the Menace's next store neighbor's name was Margaret. And she was a brat. Then Margaret on MASH kissed people. Yuck!

Otherwise it is a great name with all kinds on nicknames.

I have a different nickname for every stage of my life, Elementary school, HS, College, etc.

I love it! We're planning to use it (with NN "Maggie") for our baby due in May. Hope it isn't getting too popular!

Meg is a much better nickname for it than Maggie.

Love it, love it, love it. It was on our girl name list. It's only an old lady name in the timeless sense -- it's as easy to picture a 9 day old as a 90 year old with the name. A win in my book.

I'm a Margaret. I go by Meg. It's never felt like an old lady name to me, but it is certainly much less common than it was a century ago so maybe it is.

I know two babies this year named Margaret. One is a Maggie and one is Maggie Mae...which to me is a dog name or a song but hey.

Somewhere out in the world, there's a little Larla running around who wishes her parents had taken the decision a bit more seriously.

You've got to be kidding, right? DCUM is about as conservative as it gets when it comes to naming tastes. Most posters think "creative" names are tantamount to child abuse.

Yes, DCUM thinks that creative names are "ethnic", "white trash", and "stripper" (only for girls' names; there's no real equivalent for boys). But at the same time, DCUM thinks that uncreative names are boring and overdone.

Therefore, people expecting babies can either spend a lot of time and effort trying to find a classic, English-language name that nobody else uses, and please DCUM -- or they can pick out a name they like, and please themselves.

I really like the name Margaret and don't really think it's an "old lady name". It is most popular with older generations, but I think it's making a comeback and is a beautiful, classic name. Lots of nickname options too.
