I can appreciate your trying to find creative solutions to what you expect to be a dilemma. But for the life of me I can't figure out why you need people to tell you that your idea is wildly inappropriate. But you did and people let you know. And from what I read they were polite about it. But even though you did t get the answer you wanted and your child will have to go to the bathroom in the bathroom, no need to act like it's ok to disregard your obligation to parent your child and keep him from disturbing others on the plane. Trust me when I say no one prefers a screaming child. If truth be told most people would rather you find another way to travel.

Please put a pull-up on him. We did for our daughter when we traveled for quite a while after she was potty trained. Just because there is a toilet on a plane doesn't mean you can use it when you want to. Between turbulence, the 30 minutes before landing at DCA rule, and potential lines, there is a really good chance that a three year old won't be able to get to the potty in time. And that is what I told DD to make the pull-up acceptable to her. Did the same for long car trips.
Of course, if he soils the pull-up, he will need to enter the lavatory to change at some point.

Yes. I think it's a very good idea to put small children under ~4.5 in a pull up on a plane regardless if they are potty trained for the reasons outlined above. There are all kinds of situations in airports where you won't be able to get your kid to the potty in time for small kid bladders.

OP here- one more thing about the pull up-if he holds it, he won't be able to nap, and since its an early morning flight, this will be a whole new level of hell if he doesn't nap
But I am pretty sure I will make him use the bathroom- I will put the darn potty on top of the toilet if all else fails.
You cannot have a potty on the floor of a plane. That is nasty. Put him in a pull up and he will either manage to use the toilet or he'll hold it, or he'll have an accident in his pull-up. As far as nap schedules being disturbed and tantrum-y hell, that's just what happens when you travel with small children. It disturbs their schedule and sometimes they misbehave. It sucks, but it is what it is. Your kid won't be the first to scream on a plane and meld-down, but he will definitely be the first to piss in front of his seat.

I think it's highly unlikely that a 3.5 year old is going to nap on a morning flight, whether he pees, wears a pull up, or whatever.

Not to suggest that you should even be considering this, but if he's so picky about non-home bathrooms, I don't see why trying to use a portable potty in a tiny cramped space with strangers all around him is going to be any more successful. But I agree with all the PPs - if he can't either use the airplane bathroom, hold it, or use a diaper/pull-up, then he's not ready to fly. Or go out in any other public place, really.

Why can't you use the portable potty in the airplane bathroom?
I am a mom of a three year old boy and I would have a fit if you tried that in my row. You wouldn't get far enough along before I had the flight attendant over there.

Just let him scream. I would rather gear a kind scream fir 10 minutes than look over and see your kids bare ass while he is peeing in plain sight. Also what if you trip while going past me to take the bag of waste away and you spill it on me? I would raise holy hell. Just let him scream.

OP, fellow moms are one thing. A plane full of business people is quite another. People already hate flying and flights with kids. And people hate long flights. A kid who can use the bathroom has no business urinating in a potty in the seating area in a confined space like an airplane.

My newly potty trained 2-year-old was in a pull-up over her panties for a cross country trip and simply refused to pee for six hours. She was trained not to pee in her panties but was terrified of the loud airplane restroom. It really was problem solved.
