We did go with the Organic mattress, and the finish on our crib is non-toxic, completely natural (similar to the amish poster), converts into a full bed, etc, but still, probably not worth the crazy money spent.

Out of sheer curiosity, can I ask what you bought? We spent 200 on a crib, $150 on a crib mattress... 100 on a dresser and 100 on a used dutalier...but we were lucky; the glider would have been 400 if we hadn't been so lucky on craigslist. I don't know how I would spent $1000 on a child's room.

Used ikea crib-$40(don't buy used,blah-blah-blah)+new ikea matress $70.

I didn't care about conversion as we already own a twin bed.

I did care about made in the US, non-toxic, non-particle board, etc. So that's what I got, I think it was $650.

We spent $500 and our crib looks fabulous even after 3 years. No marks, dings, or knicks. It's obvious that the wood and finish are quality. We had an agent come look at our house and even she said darn that is one fabulous crib, I'd like to take a nap in that, lol. I think it's worth it to spend money on a quality crib if you can. Plus all of my kids will use this crib so I'm getting years of use out of it.

We bought the $300 Baby Cashe Essentials crib from BRU. I liked the styling better than the Ikea crib, and it matches the dresser we already have. I felt like we splurged, but we can afford it. While almost all cribs now a days are convertible, I wouldn't spend the money on the kit. My first kid chewed on the rail so now it's dinged up. Fine for putting the second in the crib, but we won't be keeping it after she transitions to a twin bed. Seriously, there's no need to spend $500!

We have a full for our 2 yo when he moved to big boy bed. Makes sense long term. I think if your kids might be taller you will use the convertible part.

I got the ikea crib and a fancy organic mattress. My kid hates the crib and usually sleeps in my bed! So just something to consider!
