Yes, I get that we all want to shovel our snow as soon as possible after it stops and before it freezes, since it will be a lot easier. But it stopped snowing at 11pm. There's no way I would go out there at that time and make that kind of noise. I, like every other decent person, realized the job would be harder the next morning, but that's just what you have to live with to be a good neighbor.

And no, they are not shift workers.


Next time, shovel their property for them. Otherwise, they get to do it whenever they choose. I doubt they managed to make enough noise to violate any noise ordinances. And by the way, many jurisdictions require you to remove snow within a certain amount of time from the end of snow fall.

In big storms you should make several passes.

Our walkway and driveway is down to pavement...though we did last pass at 9pm below my kids window and they slept thru it.

i am putting up w construction next door -- and an ugly addition at that --- i suffer through endless Saturdays of noise and on weekdays it starts at 6 officially but they are pulling up in the darn trucks at 5:30. OP -- thank your lucky stars that it is just one or two days. HMMMMM maybe i can get back at my neighbors tonight!

Were they individual neighbors, or a company they hired? A lot of companies hired to do this kind of stuff, do it overnight when there is less traffic (people, cars, other) to interrupt the removal.


This is what happened in my neighborhood last night... Our HOA contracts out to a company to shovel our sidewalks, as well as the walkways to our houses and steps. In order to get to all of the houses in my development before it was a sheet of ice today they were out there at 11 pm. It was kind of loud (which I blame on our crappy Toll Brothers insolation) but I didn't complain about it.
I can't fault them for wanting to get it done before it was frigid today. (And in my case...it was very nice getting up to walk the dog in the am and seeing my steps already salted and shoveled.)

OP, you are absolutely ridiculous. This happens what, once or twice a year? Suck. It. Up.

Get some earplugs, or move farther out so that you don't have neighbors. You are absolutely ridiculous.

I wiped off my car around 11:00 last night, but I purposely tried to not scrape any ice. I started my car and let the heaters go for about 10 minutes and then was able to wipe off some more.

That being said, hey, it was a better time for me...OP should buy a noise machine and just deal. I hate noise at 6:00 a.m., but I wouldn't get much sympathy from the early risers if I complained about it.

You know what? I shovel at night because in the morning, I have to get myself up and get ready before my kids wake up at 7am. It took me over an hour to shovel and I'd rather shovel at 11pm than at 4:45am. I heard my neighbors shoveling at 6am, but I'm not complaining. We all do what we have to do.

So during the 2010 storms it was assumed that I would be able to leave my apartment as soon as it stopped snowing. When my neighbors learned I was not cleaning my car for the morning but in an attempt to leave right away, they helped me dig out my car and were awesome about it!

I am sure it was annoying for you OP, but really banning people from shoveling out is ridiculous, especially since it is necessary to be able to leave your home. I mean God forbid someone needs to go to the store after 11 pm in your neighborhood- how dare they not wait till morning...

OP, have you ever seen snow before? You came here and told us they went out and shoveled when it stopped snowing. You answered your own question.

I thought people here were supposed to be bright.

In snowy areas, they plow all night to (get this) *make sure kids get to school safely* GASP! What a concept!

my dh went out to shovel at 11. I did say to him that he shouldn't do too much because it can be noisy and I can finish it in the morning. Weird thing is, he somehow managed to do it really silently. I didn't hear a thing, even upstairs in our house!

People around here are wacko about snow. I'm from the snowy Midwest and no, we don't shovel or use snow blowers at 12 AM. We're more neighborly than that. Just like we don't mow our lawns at 12 AM in the summer.


I'm also from the snowy Midwest, and unlike an unmown lawn, an unshoveled sidewalk presents a safety hazard. I know my some of my neighbors work multiple jobs with odd hours, so I am going to do the neighborly thing and cut them some slack for shoveling, which is what OP was ranting about.
