Sounds wonderful. It shouldn't be a problem in third grade, AAP or not. Just make sure your kid is on top of his work before and after the trips.

We should merge this thread with the one where all the posters are saying we should close school tomorrow for snow.... after all it's only closes for a couple days eh?
3 days? 5 days? same as the flu. Kid will have to catch up but unless they're barely hanging in there it's no big deal.

But why can't it be during the 10 weeks that the kids are out of school or within the assigned breaks? Then the kid gets BOTH the education sans jet lag AND world travel. A win-win.
It's 8 days!!!! 8 days will in no way cause problems with try childrens' 'education'
8 days is nearly 2 weeks of school. I just don't see the issue of staying within the alotted vacation times.
Exactly. New poster here; I'm not questioning the need to travel abroad. My question is, why don't you just make the effort to do so when it will impact your kid's education the least? We're traveling overseas on spring break. Kids won't miss any school at all, and they'll have an entire week in a foreign country.

I understand the one week vacation to go to New Zealand given the distance you need to fly.
In regards to waiting until retirement to see the world - what if we never make it to retirement? What if we have health problems when we retire? I'd like to live life to its fullest now when my family is healthy and we can afford to take nice vacations. We are contemplating a trip to Italy with the kids and when we go to Italy, we'll probably take them out of school for a week so that we can go for two weeks (Spring break, 2015). My kids would learn much more in those two weeks in Italy then they would in a classroom.

Wow - folks are a little bitter that you get a vacation I guess.
I applaud you for taking your child out and about - we do the same whenever we get the chance. That said, we've never had to write reports when we've missed a few days of school due to travel. Whether it's Disney or a trip to the mountains, we just go and relax and enjoy. Some teachers will give you the work ahead of time, and some won't. Some will require you to write stuff, and some won't. Some might even tell you to go and have fun and not worry about anything. My oldest missed more days than that one year from the flu, so it happens for a variety of reasons.
Other posters are correct though - in middle school it gets tricky. We missed the first three days back from winter break last year and my kid missed a quiz in math that he was not allowed to make up. The classwork in history was also not allowed to be made up, so two classes got dinged, but life went on.
