put it this way, if you love the packed beaches of bethany, with overbearing parents making sure they orchestrate the most perfect vacation for their IG, then you will not like Wildwood.

if you like nice wide beaches, diversity, fun boardwalk with awesome rides and games and deliciously bad for you boardwalk foods, while staying entertained people watching then Wildwood is worth a try.

we went to bethany with my sil and it was brutal. my kids found it boring. I found it pretentious and too crowded. we took her kids to wildwood later that summer and guess where everyone had more fun???

stay in wildwood crest for more quiet and you can drive to the boardwalk and even cape may for your dose of classy white people.

You can definitely walk to the boardwalk from wildwood crest- it just is a long walk then when you total in the whole way (tram car!) I love the crest and can take the WW boardwalk in small doses but have kids who enjoy it. I hate those tee shirt shops now, they basically sell things now that are in REAAALLY bad taste and not just cheesy IMO like they used to be. Will say WW boardwalk bathrooms got a significant upgrade from when I was a kid!

It depends on what suits you. If you're going with friends, mostly anything would be fine. I don't mind trashy beach towns - granted we only go to one about once every five years. It's fun in its own way.

I grew up going to the South Jersey beaches and still go almost every year. I barely recognized Wildwood last year- while still trashy, it was far nicer than what I remember from my youth. Most of the seediest hotels have been torn down and replaced with condos. The Crest still has a fantastic collection of 50s era motels with neon signs. It’s a fun place to at least check out and I’d even consider staying the Crest or North Wildwood again (center of town still has some sketchy/rowdy spots as noted by previous posters)

Fun for young kids. The rides on the boardwalk are great. We stayed in the Thunderbird condos.

If you have kids 5+ I'd do wildwood in a heartbeat. Only people from Jersey, PA, and New York have even heard of any of these places on the Jersey shore, and I've now been to some of the "nicer" Jersey locations and none of them were as fun as the wildwood boardwalk, and they weren't exactly luxurious or nice. I think wildwood gets a bad rap from UMC snobs who can't afford (or don't know anybody that can) a real luxury location like The Hamptons.

If you want a family friendly beach town that is not trashy, try ocean city nj. Not to be confused with the MD one, they are like night and day.

I wouldn't stay there but it's kind of fun for a night visit to the pier, especially if you have kids.

HELLOOOO.... some of you are comparing, and trashing places you have never even visited! I have visited OC, Maryland, and LIVED in West Wildwood for over 20 years! The boardwalk is BEAUTIFUL! The piers are FULL of state of the art rides and amusements, and are IMMACULATE clean. The pier bathrooms are magazine worthy, porthole mirrors, wave mosaics, waterfall faucets. Boardwalk restaurants are very upscale, expensive surf shops, immaculate FREE beaches. People...inform yourselves before you "trash" Wildwood.

Stayed at one of the rock and roll hotels in my 20s. It reeked of wet ham.
Only hotel I’ve ever been afraid to get under the covers at.

This 1000% Wildwood is great for a few hours of just the worst of human diversion, but otherwise, it is a horrid place.

If you want a lot of the fun and attractions of Wildwood and hardly any of the trashy people, check out Point Pleasant, NJ.

This is exactly us too for a Friday-Monday maybe every 2 years or so. We take the kids to the boardwalk during the day/ later afternoon one day. We stay in one of the kitschy motels that is older but very, very clean. Its insane how much they can charge for those cheesy places but they are always full!
