It's not a terrible commute but it would probably still be a good 30 minutes depending on where in Arlington and where in Tysons (although I suppose having 66 non-restricted in that direction could help). It probably just wouldn't be my first choice since she doesn't need metro access and values a short commute. I'd recommend Fairlington, but people will argue about the school quality. Some of the N. Arlington neighborhoods like Cherrydale or Westover would be nice and potentially in OP's budget, but they're sleepy (though walkable to some stores and restaurants). The Clarendon area would be great for OP but tough in her price range. Worth a look though.

Poster who suggested Dunn Loring here. Vienna isn't unfriendly but it's pretty family-oriented and not what I would recommend for someone who wants a little action. I wouldn't live in Tysons either; not much there. Falls Church City is another good suggestion - some good restuarants and bars on the downtown (route 7) strip.

But check out Dunn Loring first IMO. It is certainly not dangerous; I hope the other poster was kidding. The new places are expensive but you can find more reasonably priced condos that aren't brand new. The area has exploded. I know some people on DCUM mock the Mosiac District but it's very nice and new things are popping up all the time. A Harris Teeter is going in right by the metro. No one who lived there 10+ years ago could have dreamed that Dunn Loring/Merrifield would look like what it does today.

I have no idea why you would say it's not walkable. That's absurd. On any given day, you would find people walking around. To the school, to the drugstore, to the W&OD trail. Teens walk over to Chipotle and Starbucks all the time since that's their local hangout, older kids walking over to the teen club at the community center. I don't like driving everywhere, the walkability of Vienna was a huge draw for me. If you live farther from the center, than yes there is less to walk to, but I was pretty clear about where to look if walkability is important.

Also saying single moms would not feel welcome is bizarre. It's family oriented for all families, not just 2 parent households. There are single parents here as well as families with grandparents living with them. There are also plenty of senior citizens and empty nesters. That's the best thing about this neighborhood. Not every home has the standard 2 parents, 2 young kids that you would find in some communities.
