There's really a community feel, and there are parks, streams, trails, etc. My part of the neighborhood has a large block party every year, and I know a lot of my neighbors. It's walking distance to Ballston, which is really changing.
As to schools, our part of Bluemont is zoned for Ashlawn/Kenmore/W&L. Our child is in Ashlawn, and I am very impressed by the teachers and staff. I don't have any first-hand experience with Kenmore, but many of our neighbors have been very happy with it. Diversity isn't necessarily a bad thing.

PP Sit down while I tell you this The Italian Store in Westover will actually have tables rather than the little bar at the store in Lyon Village. That has been the big stumbling block with Arlington County but Tommy Tramonte has gotten through it. Can you say "Milano on a hard roll, sweet peppers, please"

you had a bad experience at one of these schools? why did you find it so "shitty"?
