Sorry, maybe it's because we're no to this process by I can't decipher some of these acronyms -- what is HYP and NE boarding school? And why is a NE boarding school even relevant on a college board?

It allows plenty of time to apply elsewhere. You just have to do it at the same time as the UVA application. Really you should be doing that even for a dec 15 notification. My DC did one ED (deferred), one EA (accepted), one EA (UVA), and 3 RD apps before hearing from the ED school. Based on the deferral now doing a few more apps before 12/31. Sure a UVA acceptance would mean not doing some of these additional apps but we learned with the first kid not to wait until ED decisions to do the rest of the apps as you are not in your best frame of mind.
