Sorry, maybe it's because we're no to this process by I can't decipher some of these acronyms -- what is HYP and NE boarding school? And why is a NE boarding school even relevant on a college board?

HYP=Harvard/Yale/Princeton. I assume people use this instead of Ivy League because they don't want others to get the impression that applicant could only get into a loser school like Brown or Cornell. NE=New England Boarding School=feeder school for elite colleges.

Don't be a jerk! Of course the family felt disappointed - if only for their child. Why do people get so condescending about parents who are involved with their kids' decisions or express disappointment that their child isn't able to get something they've worked for (i.e. "why are you worrying? it's your child going to school, not you…"). It's obnoxious and unnecessary. If you are really a parent who is completely hands off concerning your child and that works for you and your family then great, but other parents may handle things differently. And guess what…that's okay!

It allows plenty of time to apply elsewhere. You just have to do it at the same time as the UVA application. Really you should be doing that even for a dec 15 notification. My DC did one ED (deferred), one EA (accepted), one EA (UVA), and 3 RD apps before hearing from the ED school. Based on the deferral now doing a few more apps before 12/31. I disagree. The UVA schedule is a pain, and DC didn't even apply there, but we've heard the complaints from DC's friends.

Yes, of course you should apply to some schools at the same time. But there is a big difference between the schools that offer EA and rolling admissions, which are more likely to be safety schools, and the more select schools that are probably our kids' preferred choices. The former generally don't require extra essays, while the latter do. The time spent polishing the extra essays for the second set of schools can be huge. Not to mention the application fees of $50-80 a pop.

UVA is the worst off all. They don't release their EA results until after January 1st. It doesn't allow time to apply elsewhere. Thanks for nothing Charlottesville.
