I gotta tell you, the second I saw the cover art that PP posted for the book I was looking for, it brought me right back to 1987, being holed up in my room reading this book and poring over the pictures. And yes, some of the other books suggested by PPs look tempting too. Thanks to everyone for their help.
By the way another owl book that I like that is more for a younger audience is "Owl Babies," a very sweet picture book for little kids that has lovely artwork.
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention another series of books that I loved -- I remember this series, fortunately -- that is also hard to find in print, at least most of the books: All of a Kind Family and the sequels. The original All of a Kind Family book is available online but I think the wonderful sequels are only available in Kindle form, if at all. This series is about a Jewish family growing up in NYC during the 1930s and it was another set of books I borrowed from the library over and over again, along with the Little House on the Prairie books.
