Subject: 35 and above
I have little kids, so no desire (or budget) for expensive clothes. I shop at Kohl's. I had been shopping at Target but their stuff falls apart. I like Kohl's because they have good sales and coupons, and they have lots of different styles. They've gotten me out of my Old Navy jeans/maternity shirts rut

You can get some higher-end clothes at consignment stores, if you're looking for a modestly-expensive way to upgrade your wardrobe. Two places I like a lot are Secondi in Dupont and Mint Condition in Old Town Alexandria. (Mint Condition has a lot of old J Crew and BR, but it also has a lot of other brands as well.)
Agree that 35 isn't any sort of magic age.
Also agree that Lands End does have some good stuff, but also has a lot of crap. One of my favorite summer dresses is from there - chambray sleeveless dress with pockets. I had to get it shortened to make it work, though; it started off mid-calf, which is not a good look for me.

I've changed my shopping places according to the difference in income coming in. I like to buy nicer pieces now that I can afford them and thus shop at stores that cost a bit more. I still get some parts of my wardrobe from places like Target and H&M, but I have a pretty decent eye for finding the jewel amongst the junk.
I would suggest ordering some catalogs from different places and going "window" shopping for a day or two and try to find some places that resonate with your style. And then slowly add new pieces to your closet and keep a bin in nearby for donating some of your older things.
