It's definitely an AA name, but I think an ugly one. Are you AA? there's so many better names regardless. I picture an ugly person.

I don't get these suggestions (along with Marco which someone else mentioned) What if OP comes from a red-headed Irish family? Is it really better to sound like you're FOB from Greece, Latvia or Italy than share a name that a few African Americans may have?

+1

I find this entire thread bizarre and disheartening. Why are white people afraid of using a name (European in origin I might add) simply because they associate it with black Americans? It's one thing if you don't like the sound of a name, but to steer away from it for the sole reason that you think others would assume your child is a different race -- what kind of depressing statement does that make about these posters, and our country, that this is perceived as a negative?

You could always go for Makis, which sounds kind of Greek or maybe Latvian, if Marcus is too AA.

Marcus (Markus) is a very popular name in Germany and Scandinavia.

Then there's always Marcus Wellby, M.D.

Same here. When I hear or read the name Marcus, I think of a black basketball player.

I like it, but it's my boss's name (spelled Markus, he's Swedish) so probably wouldn't use it myself.

Love the name.

I was going to suggest the same thing -- name the baby Marcus Aurelius, if you are worried about people assuming from the name that he is black (even if he is black). It wouldn't have occurred to me that this was a name coded as black, what with all the little white Marks and Marcos I know.

The extremely white British kid in About A Boy (the Hugh Grant film) is Marcus.

I like it too. I have no racial connection to it, I don't see why that would matter. It's not a foreign name for goodness sake.

My white friend's 8 y.o. DS is Marcus. Love it. Have a white coworker with a little boy named Malcolm, which some might also consider AA. Super cute, and I had that name on my short list, but ended up having a girl.

I like it but at some point he will be called "mucus" by other kids.
