Well OP, you can be high and mighty until it happens to you. Then, don't expect any sympathy. I try not to think mean thoughts about others because it always seems to backfire. Spread good karma out in the world...not bad.

I sometimes think along the same lines as OP. For instance, a couple of weeks ago and MIT student fell through the skylight on a roof an apt in Boston. He didn't die although had quite a few injuries. Turns out he was jumping up and down on the skylight. While I'm glad he will live and if someone asked me what I thought, I'd say it was a scary accident and I hope he comes out okay, inside I'm thinking "well that was a pretty stupid thing to do. Can we jus t make a distinction between judging and simply thinking about the situation. When you tell me an issue that was really just the result of your carelessness, I may not be "Judging" but simply seeing what seems to be a major contributing factor.

I don't judge for example,
MIL: my car broke down, come pick me up please
I would gladly pick up my MIL and I don't think of the reasons why her car could have broken down.

But when someone tells me a "woe is me" story and expects pity, I sometimes think about how the problem could have been avoided.

What irks people is your mentality. 'Well, they were warned!' Even if you think it, you are technically saying it to yourself in your head. Your mind speak kinda sucks I have to say. I clearly stated I feel bad for my kid who broke a bone. My point was that in my mind I have the thought of "well you were warned" so that when she's complaining abt not being able to take gymnastics I don't feel like I need to coddle her and say things like "oh it's okay, we can put you in a craft class" which is what I did when my son was hurt and couldn't play his favorite sport for 2 months.

You are acting like I'm spitting on her and saying "I don't feel bad, in fact I'm not even gonna take you to a doctor." No, I'm simply saying "Hun, you got hurt before sliding on the railing and I tell you constantly to stop, now you can't participate in gymnastics with Kara. You'll have to wait till the doctors say it's ok"

And no I'm not narcissistic. I think I make mistakes too.. A lot of em. But I do like to recognize when I have done something wrong or just tempted fate once too many.

Omg you don't feel bad if your child BREAKS A BONE??! That is cold. You may not voice those views but I can bet you that your kid knows how you feel. It is a weird superiority complex you have because I can assure you that you are just as flawed as the rest of us. Perhaps you are less clumsy and more protective of your belongings. But I am fairly certain you make mistakes too. Honestly you sound rather narcissistic and it makes me sad for your kids.

Pp, in the case of the stroller I don't think it's because she wasn't "expecting to get screwed over". Some things are simply about common sense and being aware of surroundings. You don't leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition do you? (Had a family member here in DC do that too... She then wanted to complain abt how unsafe the city is) It's not because you are a pessimist but because you have common sense.

What have I said abt kids that makes me a bitch? The fact that if you are injured once mildly and continue to do the same thing and get hurt again doesn't make me hard hearted, it means I'm teaching my kids that their actions have consequences.

Like I have stated before, I only think these things and occasionally tell a friend my opinion if we are casually talking.

I tend to have a lot of compassion for people in those situations, because I can sympathize. I don't consider myself stupid or careless, but I do a lot of those kinds of things.

I usually have my head in the clouds and am thinking of other things. I'm always working on or planning some project which takes a lot of thought and can easily overlook a whole range of things.

As for something like the stroller, I guess I would see it as this is a person who is probably pretty optimistic about life, isn't always looking for the next bad thing to happen, and tends to trust people and life. In that case, the occasional loss is well worth going through life feeling that way. I always feel sorry for people who are expecting someone to screw them over.

Agree. This is different than a natural consequence. If your MIL had jumped off the roof and hurt her knee, then you might be justified because That would be stupid.
