I just paid for two PTAs for a family member, one parent is a student and they are free and reduced lunch. They can really use the directory to socially support one of their kids who is very very shy. I really don't think that's something they should charge for. They volunteer and participate but $15 to find out the names of the kids in the class and how to reach them? I resent that.

$40 per family, or $30 if you join before labor day. beverly farms elementary. I think the directory is made available to everyone regardless of whether they join or not but not entirely sure. We're new to the school.

The amount of money our PTA spends on MSA week is absurd. The business of school comes to a stand-still...kids are given all kinds of treats just because they are taking the MSA. No homework, phone reminders to make their kids sleep early and eat a good breakfast.

$25 for adults, with a suggestion to donate more. We are at a "W" school that does no other fundraising for the PTSA.

I'm 11:18.

Our PTA lists at least 30 activities and committees (including directory committee) under its umbrella, but for 1/4 of the cost.

I think you're being had, lady.

Some PTAs ask for a larger payment to avoid the need for fundraisers, which almost everyone hates. I don't think anyone's being had.

So in order to avoid fundraisers, you set the PTA dues at $40. Which dissuades people from joining the PTA. Which lowers the total amount of dues. So then you have to do fundraisers...

(My very very very favorite fundraiser is, "Please send us a check." I don't have to buy [useless stuff I don't want or need], I don't have to eat at [restaurant I don't go to] --all I have to do is write a check, and the school gets every last penny of it.)

Ha! Are you at Bethesda or Westland? This is exactly what happened!

I am the one with the $10 fee for individuals and $15 fee for families. And yes, you're being had.

Our PTA relies on donations, and I couldn't be happier. After all the goddamned nickel and diming my daughter's small private inflicted on us, I say, "Take the check! Take my $15, and I'll throw in $100 more!"

up front, clean and simple

We survive off donations! yes!

A W school is where no one goes to Maryland state school like Frostburg, Salisbury, UMBC, or Towson. To do so would inflame the mobs and you would have to move to another part of the county.

Also the students shit does not stink nor does that of the parents and nannies.

That is great, but the same is true of our Silver Spring school that charges $5, and gives the directory to everyone.

+1 And bet the SS school has more membership than BE, which just lost new members due to appalling way it's handled some discussion about this on its listserv.

Except that Bethesda does have large fundraisers...
