I'm not a teacher, but just wanted to say that many of us feel the way you do when we go to work - doctors, therapists, soldiers...lots of people whose work impacts people's lives deeply. And just like you, they do what they need to do well, taking care of the kids and people they love, and wait for the feeling to change. It usually does. And if you go a year or two and the feeling remains...you make a career change. Good luck! Hope the start of school brought good things.

OP, how is is going? I hope that your year is off to a better start than you anticipated and that you are loving teaching. I also hope that you are able to have boundaries regarding how much of your own $ you use and are making sure to have time for you every day.

You can go fuck yourself with a rusted pole. Sideways.

Your question should be "why shouldn't we pay all teachers a wage commensurate with their expertise and experience so that they don't have to make lots of personal and financial sacrifices to be a great teacher?"

Ps I bet you wouldn't last a day teaching a class of three year olds.

What do you think such a wage should be? I'm a lawyer with eight years of experience and make $70K. Not vastly different from this preschool teacher - do you think I should be paid more?

OP - how are you doing? I don't know why but I thought of your thread this evening.

With 7 years experience, that is exactly how much they make (more if they have a masters, and much more if they've received a 'highly effective' rating two years in a row).

She may teach PK at a private school or religious school. Teaching in DC doesn't always mean DCPS.

Well then the answers to her financial problems are simple - get a job w/ DCPS ASAP.

Good luck, OP! What you do is valuable and admirable. Take care of yourself.

Hold up. If it's your 7th year of teaching in DC you make a minimum of $62k. Don't tell me the pay's not enough. That's about $20k more than the average teacher makes, and it's plenty to live decently in DC.

Now, teaching is hard as hell, and you sure as hell deserve every penny, but it's not like you could just jump into some other job making that much.

Treat yourself DAILY.

Repeat what works. Change what doesn't. Don't be afraid to find a few lazy go-tos and give yourself a break once or twice a week.

I have a sneaking suspicion you're at my school. Do you have 3s or 4s?

I did a workshop on avoiding burnout and it talked about using de stressors that were healthy. also partering with co workers, they can help you and give you inspiration.
