Back to driver's ed for some of you!

This makes trunk access more difficult. As such, it is not always the best move for folks.

Because you are more likely to hit someone, either a pedestrian or another car. You have way too many blind spots when you back out.
There are exactly the same number of blind spots backing into a parking space as backing out, and there is a lot more space backing out than backing in. It's simple math.
Yes, you are correct that the number of blind spots is the same. Here is what is different--the number of MOVING cars that are potentially coming into those blind spots. When you back in, the cars in your blind spots are fixed and known. When you pull out of a space in reverse, you don't know whether cars are moving towards your car from either side. Also, you are less likely to see a pedestrian.
Don't lose any sleep. OP's thread should tell you volumes.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:My dad was a firefighter and he taught me to always back in. It makes it safer (and faster) to exit.
Sorry, but your dad was an idiot.
It is safer (and faster) to pull in forward than backward.
For any parking job, you have to go both backward, and foreword.
Why not back into the big space and drive foreward into the small space?
You backer-inners are kidding yourselves.
While he may be an idiot (although he can spell "forward," and you can't), he is correct on this issue. In a parking lot, the likelihood of a person running into the space you are backing into (and the likelihood that you would not see them if they did) is much smaller. Think about a crowded lot and you're trying to back out. You have to wait forever and inch out because of all the blind spots, not to mention the possibility of a child running out.
Ask a police officer the next time you see one.
It's not significantly safer, but there is a difference, especially if you have a lot of practice and are able to do it quickly and efficiently. Curious as to why OP is so worked up over it. http://theweek.com/article/index/212052/why-back-in-parking-is-safer

What kind of fast getaway are you planning since there are too many cars on the main road once you leave the parking lot? It's kind of a weird show-offy thing to do that is pointless and takes up everybody's time -- oh, I get it, that must be the reason why people around here do it!
That's crap. How do you know no other part of the country backs in? Give me a brake. Who the hell are you? The country's backing in police?Anonymous wrote:No other part of the country does this backing in thing. It's really weird.
