I think you are confused between reversing into a parking space and parallel parking.

Yes, you are correct that the number of blind spots is the same. Here is what is different--the number of MOVING cars that are potentially coming into those blind spots. When you back in, the cars in your blind spots are fixed and known. When you pull out of a space in reverse, you don't know whether cars are moving towards your car from either side. Also, you are less likely to see a pedestrian.

It takes me 2 moves to back into a spot (pull up at angle, and then back in) because I always back in where we live and in the parking garage where I work. I know exactly how big my car is and what spots I can and can't fit in. It actually takes less time to back in vs backing out for the reason above. There's only so much you can see when you're backing out of a spot and cars in general don't slow down or (god forbid) stop and let you pull out of a spot if you're at least 1/3 to 1/2 there. Pedestrians also aren't paying attention.
That being said, if there are cars waiting behind me, I generally won't back in because people are too impatient.

In a parking lot, the likelihood of a person running into the space you are backing into (and the likelihood that you would not see them if they did) is much smaller. Think about a crowded lot and you're trying to back out. You have to wait forever and inch out because of all the blind spots, not to mention the possibility of a child running out.

Ask a police officer the next time you see one.

No other part of the country does this backing in thing. It's really weird. What kind of fast getaway are you planning since there are too many cars on the main road once you leave the parking lot? It's kind of a weird show-offy thing to do that is pointless and takes up everybody's time -- oh, I get it, that must be the reason why people around here do it!

I like to be able to use/access my trunk via the hatch back and often idiots park too close to me to allow that. So no, I won't always pull through.
