OP, honestly you've got some good suggestions, but if you can't afford $1500 for an engagement ring (or god forbid can afford it but don't think it's worth it), maybe you should rethink the whole process. The wedding itself is going to cost at about $5,000 bargain basement.
I hate to bring up money when discussing a romantic life event, but really you and your future fiance should discuss finances and the future now ... not put it off til later.

We are actually planning on spending about $5,000 on the wedding. We will be getting married in Congressional Cemetary in a small ceremony, with a family friend officiating, then we will be having a catered BBQ reception afterward at our house (we've been together for a very long time, and already own a home together).
