The top of the Reddit thread mentions The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, which I totally agree with.

I also loved Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Life of Pi is fascinating, but I found The Reluctant Fundamentalist to be truly amazing - and timely.
