The PPs are defining "good schools" as "schools attended almost entirely by the children of affluent white or Asian parents". If these are your criteria too, then in Montgomery County, you should look in the Whitman cluster (FARMS <5%, 70% white, 12% Asian) or the Churchill cluster (FARMS <5%, 58% white, 22% Asian).

Good schools to most people means high performing schools with high performing student bodies.

Don't agree wth you at all. I've worked in VA and lived in DC and Maryland. I certainly a experienced a difference.

I've lived in all three--grew up in MD, lived in VA for almost a decade, have lived in DC for almost 15 years--and completely agree. VA is different, and it's particularly frustrating to live in a place like Arlington and see the stranglehold conservative lawmakers have on state policy. MD is a truly progressive state with a top-notch school system. While you can find communities in each state that are very similar in terms of demographics (Arlington and Bethesda, McLean and Potomac), at the state level, VA and MD could not be more different.

Given that one partner is going to SE DC and the other works from home, why not the southern end of Anne Arundel, or Crofton, or Severna Park?

And of course over the next 10-15 years a lot of these perimeter zones will change, as demographic trends make the current boundaries for BCC, WJ, and Churchill unsustainable (Whitman is a little more insulated.) But really, after that top tier the rest of MoCo schools are still far superior to the majority of the schools anywhere else in the DC area, except for certain Ffx schools.

In Montgomery County you can't go by zipcode. One zip can feed to different schools with very different "desirability". For example, the zip code 20852 has homes that feed to Walter Johnson (Desirability Factor 10+ for most people), while others feed to Wheaton (DF 1- for most). So be careful.
Note: Of course everyone has their own assessment of desirability. I'm reflecting what seems to be the predominant opinion I read/hear. And I myself chose against WJ for my kids.

OP looks like you're getting many responses from posters in Northern Virginia. You should look at whether or not the politics of the state is something you can live with.
