Actually, they did have to leave. Read the wikipedia piece below. As I understand it, the show's creators went to the Utah Attorney General and the U.S. Federal District Attorney and said "do you have a problem with this if we do a show?". They said no, citing lack of resources. What the producer failed to do (or failed to do on purpose to create drama) was to check with local law reinforcement. Immediately after the show aired, in response to calls, the local Lehigh police came a'knockin because they had a bigamy statute. And that statute said that bigamy could be proven simply by "cohabitation". So suddenly the group house disappears and the women move into four rentals in Utah. Then, undisclosed to the viewers, the producers work up Kody to agree to file a first amendment case in the U.S. Federal district court in Utah, using local D.C. law professor (ugh) Jonathan Turley. That case was going forward which gave the gals a reprieve in their rentals to start the search and ultimate buying of land and building of houses. Last I knew, the federal court was going to decide whether or not to take the case or through it out as meritless (and these judges, both state and fed, and law officials do not want to mess with polygamy; it never comes out well - remember that raid at the J. Compound in Texas. So Kody has dreams of recovery and punitive dollars in his eyes. I don't know what the status is of that suit. Meanwhile, if the family wanted to live together in a compound, they had to move because the Lehigh police were not going to allow cohabitation. What I want to know who is funding all of this? The jewelry business went kaput (the old website is no longer operating). The real estate career never got off the ground. No one is working a real job. Kody is doing his marketing of health juices, but that's it. How were they to afford those homes? Especially since many of the, especially the youngest, had bad credit reports. And Meri's house was the last to clear escrow. Why? She is the only one legally married to Kody? Hers should have gone thru first as the spouse to a married man presumably making lots of money on a pyramid scheme. Were the houses built on spec? Was TLC supporting the purchases, and, if so, are they going to leave town when they get tired of the Browns and leave them with four large mortgages. And did the other "wives" have to move first so as to satisfy some Las Vegas law about a man moving and bringing his wives after him (like what happened in Texas). If he showed up last, does that make a difference? I don't know.

I agree with everything except the need to harp on their size. Janelle is at least working out every day and doing something healthy and just for her. I bet if she didn't have all the stress of being the head of this large family the weight would be falling off. She seems so frustrated because she's not working and she's not bringing in enough money to really take care of anything.

Oh, and Meri, why does she need such a big house? She doesn't need it or deserve it she's just being a selfish bitch. Now she's making multiple trips to the construction site, making changes, but she can't be bothered to finish up all her paperwork? WTF? She needs to get her shit together. She and Robyn both need to accept the fact that they have a hobby business and find real jobs. Christine will take care of all the kids during the day when they are working.

They need to let go of that jewelry business.

Can you imagine having Christine for your real estate agent? If she wasn't crying, she'd be moaning about having to do the overwhelming work of showing you a house, if she'd even have had the sense to find any.

I still don't quite understand how you go about building four houses when you don't even have the financing approved on two of them, and nobody seems to have regular jobs.

Is it my imagination, or has Cody gotten flakier this season?

It bugs me the way they always say "homes." And Meri going to her "home" all the time, clogging up the construction progress with little changes, while not finishing her financing paperwork was super irritating. I'd be pissed if she was my sisterwife. They all still are too heavy, except Robyn, so I don't think the gym thing is working for them. And Christine JUST figured out that real estate business takes place in the evenings and weekends? after spending months studying for the real estate exam and finally passing it? My on-going theory is that all of them have ADD; no one is a planner in that family.

THat said, I don't care at all that they have formed a family and are raising their kids together. Whatever, the kids are fed, healthy, going to college, going out with friends, playing sports, going to public school. Fine.

Not for me, but on the one hand, I don't care what someone else's family does. I do feel bad for the kids for being forced to flee the state in that one episode.
