If by "TJ" you mean Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, that school is located in Fairfax County with an Alexandria mailing address. It is also a school with an extremely competitive entrance exam, and most of the students admitted come from Fairfax County and a very few from Arlington County. However, Longfellow does have an excellent math program and does send many students to TJ.

Try looking at the few homes in the center of McLean. It has a very slightly urban feel, and you can walk to shopping and restaurants.

Not really, particularly where the nicer parts of the Marshall district, out towards Wolf Trap in Vienna, are concerned. These areas are, and will remain, very car-dependent and a slog to DC.

We live just off Great Falls near Lewinsville Park in Mclean 22101. I believe we are zoned for Kent Gardens/Longfellow/Mclean. Houses are a mix of colonials and ramblers. The neighborhood is 'old' but changing fast. The houses are not new and do need refurbishment. For me it is close enough to walk to the metro which is about a mile away. ( I used to walk close on 3 miles to work when I lived inDC.) But I know that many people would consider this too far of a walk.

Nothing in McLean would be walkable to the Silver Line, and Tysons East station won't have parking, so your only option would be to drop off or to ride a bus to the metro. Houses near West Falls Church metro station would have both metro walkability AND McLean schools, but your mailing address will be Falls Church, not McLean. That part of Falls Church is easily accessible to DC. The other part of McLean that's closer to DC is near Rt 123 but it won't have metro access. Great schools there too.

There will be parts of McLean walkable to new Silver Line stations. For the most part, however, they will be in or near Tysons with McLean mailing addresses, and more likely condos or townhouses than expensive SFHs. The most expensive SFHs in McLean that are walkable to the new stations will be near Chain Bridge and Anderson Roads and zoned for Westgate ES, Longfellow MS and McLean HS. But in general, walkability isn't as big a part of the McLean lexicon as it is in Arlingon. Instead, people focus on the overall convenience of living in McLean and the fact that it's a short drive to a lot of different places and less congested than many other parts of the DC region.

Having lived in both, the people are more than a little delusional in Langley, OP. If you want down to earth (literally and figuratively) I would pick McLean to Langley, no contest.

Even moreso, having been to the surrounding pools, I like the Falls Church area that feeds into McLean HS. The people seem nicer, and I am not the only person I know who has said this without solicitation of opinion.

If you want to be near a metro I would pick 22043 (west falls church/pimmit), 22046 (fairfax/falls church city) or Dun lorring or vienna

22043 (where I live) is NOT McLean. OP asked for McLean. Haycock is not in McLean. It's in Falls Church (the county part, not the city).

I'm not sure why the pp is hell-bent on making this "not McLean" argument but for the price, schools, proximity to metro/ease of commute to dc, and house size OP is looking for, 22043 (the part that feeds into McLean HS) is completely relevant to this thread and her questions about the area.

The McLean/Falls Church thing really depends on the type of house interests the OP. It's hard to find new SFH construction in McLean under $1.5 million right now, whereas you can find new construction in Falls Church/22043 (McLean or Marshall HS districts) in the $1.3-1.4M range, typically a new Craftsman-style house (which I think look better on larger lots in Falls Church and McLean than on a smaller lot in Arlington, which tends to drive the design). On the other hand, if she's more interested in older homes, she can find them in that price range in McLean or Falls Church/22043.

If she wants to spend 1.2 million or less with good schools, a newer larger home with metro and a good commute mclean is not for her. I agree with the other non mclean zip codes to achieve her desires.
