Maryland resident here so I love UMD but your son made a mistake.
Not OP, but UMd is much better than UVa with engineering and computer science.
Hardly

Anonymous wrote:Pool chat among the moms is that UVA seems to be accepting less (otherwise well qualified) kids from FCPS than previous years. This seems to be something more/different from simply "UVA is highly selective." Many of the rejected kids are going OOS and usually to higher ranked schools.

Maryland resident here who has a degree in CS from UVA; the MD CS department is definitely better than the UVA CS department. If the better CS experience/opportunities are more important than being at a (IMO) significantly nicer place to spend 4 years then they definitely did not make a mistake.

If you were a reasonably decent A/B student, and did well on your SATs (there were about 20-30 of us in my HS class of around 1000 kids), you were a shoe in for UVA and W&M. Not everyone chose those schools, because other VA publics and some privates gave loads of scholarship money. When you are one of a handful of kids from your school, in an impoverished area, to do well, it's just a lot more impressive than a rich kid from FCPS. It has been this way for at least 15 years. So I always laugh at all the fighting and scrapping that goes on in FCPS as to which HS you are zoned for. If you really care about college admissions, move to Tidewater or Pennington Gap.

Also, by state law, roughly 30% of UVa acceptees are from out of state because they pay higher tuition than in-state students. Essentially, out-of-state students help to subsidize the cost of education for in-state students.

Anonymous wrote:UVA accepts 1/3 out of state bec Jefferson wanted a national university. Of course it helps with the budget too.
