The schools are not "better" in No Arlington, there is just a completely different demographic. One could argue that there are better opportunities in South Arlington for children to be exposed to other cultures. South Arlington has some wonderful neighborhoods and some really great people. And, housing prices are less. We live in the neighborhood near Claremont Immersion and I actually know some No Arlington families that have begged to get their kids into Claremont. Also, you can buy a turnkey house for under 800k in S Arlington. Nothing like that in No Arlington.

The focus on schools is misleading. You have to start with the fact that South Arlington is less convenient to Metro and has an inferior housing stock, apart from a few neighborhoods and luxury apartment buildings. The rest flows from that.

The schools are not there yet but otherwise its not too bad

I stayed at the metropolitan apartments in pentagon city for five weeks while my husband was detailed to DC and I thought it was very nice! And very $$$, too! We can't even afford a 3 bedroom apartment there in crime ridden south arlington!

It all boils down to the same reason anyone feels superior to anyone else: when you are insecure about your choices, you have to make someone else's choices look worse. If I paid 850 grand for an ugly North Arlington brick rambler ("for the schools" of course) I'd probably be attempting to explain how special N. Arlington is, too.

I think the school issue is interesting. It seems like it these big high schools, there are schools within schools. So your kid is going to be surrounded by people of similar intellect, regardless of which school you pick. Maybe I'm wrong.
