I went to a high school in Louisiana that sent a huge number of students to OM. I didn't think it was very hard to get into. For the record, the school I went to was even easier to get in, but I digress. That said, there is a lot of racism still in the deep south. It's just true. Nothing against OM but I still get nervous when I go home to visit. It just seems less civilized. Racism is more open and accepted. Segregation is everywhere. People knowing their "place" is important. There is a lot not to like about the deep south and if OP's child was raised in this area, it might be a shock to his sensibilities.

To be honest though, I think most people on this board would be ashamed to admit they had any idea how difficult it was to get into Ole Miss

Any local grad from this area would like be an honors grad from Ole Miss. That might mean something if you want to stay in Mississippi. But if you plan to come back here, UMBC, GMU or VCU would be better options.

Exactly. Getting into instate flagships in the mid atlantic area is increasingly difficult, and private schools are 50-60k per year. High end publics like Michigan, UCLA, and UCB are pushing 50 thousand for OOS. Ole Miss and some other southeastern schools that have name recognition due to sports have really low OOS tuition and are offering generous aid on top of that, so naturally there's the interest.

Two Ole Miss Students were going to Starkville to beat up a guy named Clarence because he had stolen one of their girlfriends. The two guys come to a bridge that has a big sign on it which reads "Clearance 8 feet 10 inches". When they saw this the turned around and floored it all the way back to Oxford.
